The development of the ovary in Hordeum vulgare L. cultivars appears to be highly canalized to both environmental and minor genetic variations. The canalization seems to be disrupted in the female sterile mutants. As a result, the female sterile lines showed a considerable variation for seed set, stigma hairiness, and stigma and ovary lengths. Seed set and stigma hairiness were significantly correlated.
