Tall determinate varieties of pigeon peas (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) usually planted in May through June, grow 2.5 m tall and must be hand harvested. Dwarf determinate varieties planted in December, under flower inducing short‐day conditions, produce a small plant about 1 m tall that can be mechanically harvested. Yields of 2,544 kilos per hectare have been obtained at populations of 165,000 plants per hectare.
