Five hundred nodules from the soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merrill] variety ‘Lee’ were serotyped each of 3 years. The Rhizobium japonicum [(Kirchner) Buchanan] strains in the nodules were classified into serogroups according to their serological reaction. Standard errors of the mean were computed for the predominant serogroups to determine the variability of the R. japonicum population within the field. R. japonicum variability was found to be greater within than between areas (blocks) in the field.
