White shoots (flags) occur sporadically on occasional plants in alfalfa stands infected with stem nematode ( Ditylenchus dipsaci , [Kuhn] Filipjev) in central Washington State. All plants showing white flagging were found to be infected. Attempts to induce this symptom consistently under controlled conditions were unsuccessful.
