Seedlings of oat, Avena sativa L., varieties were grown with continuous light and with a complete nutrient solution. Varieties differed significantly in percentage of plants with roots at lower leaf nodes. No ‘Clintland,’ ‘Kelsey,’ ‘Orbit,’ or ‘Russell’ plants grown at 27 ± 2 C developed roots at third leaf nodes. In contrast 95% of ‘Niagara’ and 100% of ‘Dorval’ plants developed roots at this node.
