Reactions between pollen and pistils of ‘Buffalo’ alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) were studied in vitro . In most cases pollen tube length varied significantly when pollen from a plant was placed in combinations with pistils from different plants. Variations in pollen tube length associated with the pollen‐pistil combinations were not significantly related to compatibility differences.
