The inheritance of a male‐sterile character in red clover was investigated within F 1 , BC 1 , and sib‐mated F 1 progeny. This character apparently is controlled by a single recessive gene. Anthers of homozygous recessive plants do not dehisce and, in general, contain nonstaining, shriveled pollen grains. Segregation in the BC 1 and sib‐mated F 1 progeny gave a satisfactory fit to a ratio of three malefertile plants to one male‐sterile plant. The symbol, ms 1 , is proposed for this single recessive gene in red clover.
