Inter‐row competition among soybean ( Glycine max L. Merrill) genotypes was studied separately for maturity groups I and II by comparing the performance of four genotypes in each group using bordered and nonbordered plots. Two spacings between rows, 46 and 91 cm, were used during 3 years, 1965, 1966, and 1967. Seed yield, plant height, weight of 100 seeds, maturity, and lodging index were the characters investigated to study competitive effects. Differences among genotypes for yield competitive effects were found with the narrow but not the wide row spacing. These differences were greater among group I then among group II genotypes. Specific and specific ✕ genotype interactions for competition effects involving yield were‐not significant. Adjusted average competitive effects for each character and the bias for yield of each genotype in each group for each row spacing were estimated. The magnitude of these effects for seed yield suggested the need for bordered plots at the narrow but not at the wide row spacing. Adjusted average competitive effects for characters other than yield, while statistically significant in certain tests, were too small to be of any practical consequence.
