Metaphase‐I pairing and anaphase‐I distribution were studied in four varieties and six hybrids of barley, Hordeum vulgare L. emend Lam. These data were compared with level of fertility. Multivalent formation was not related to fertility level, but the distribution of chromosomes at anaphase‐I was closely related to fertility. Preferential pairing for the genes orange lemma and smooth awns was found in autotetraploid barley hybrids. Progress in breeding for higher fertility in tetraploid barley might be attained by accumulation of small structural differences to enhancep referential pairing.
