Seven S 1 generation smooth bromegrass ( Bromus inermis Leyss.) plants from a broad base source population were crossed in all combinations by the mutual‐pollination technique. Plants with certain contrasting morphological features were chosen as representatives of different uniform S 1 progenies. Differences among progenies of all crosses were significant for vigor, plant type, plant diameter, plant height, and green weight per plant but not for leafspot reaction. Specific combining ability was most important. General combining ability and reciprocal effects were less prominent.
