A significant reduction in stalk dry weight was found to occur during the last half of the grain‐filling period for several corn ( Zea mays L.) hybrids grown at various plant populations during two seasons in Ontario. This decrease was attributed to a remobilization towards the ear of soluble carbohydrates stored temporarily in the stalk.
