Two assays were developed for screening individual alfalfa ( Medicago saliva ) plants for crude saponin. Twenty alfalfa leaf samples, selected on the basis of erythrocyte assay results, were evaluated by the fish assay and secondly by a chemical determination for saponins. The correlation coefficients of these assay results were ∝erythrocyte vs. chemical (r = .90), √fish vs. √erythrocyte (r = −.91), and √fish vs. chemical (r = −.81). Results indicate that the two assays may provide rapid and accurate estimates of crude saponin in alfalfa plants.
