The photosynthesis of single, attached leaves was measured in the Held in a well‐ventilated, brightly illuminated chamber by infrared gas analysis. Differences in mean photosynthesis rates of 100 to 200% were observed among inbred, hybrid, and open‐pollinated varieties grown in temperate and tropical climates. Photosynthetic heterosis was apparent in single crosses derived from inbreds of divergent ancestry. Marked variability in photosynthesis among plants of several varieties was observed. Photosynthetic rates were correlated with fresh weight of leaf lamina and days between emergence and silking, but not with dry weight of leaf lamina, or with water content or soluble solids of leaf.
