A relationship between herbicide effectiveness in weed control and spring feeding damage by alfalfa weevil larvae was observed in field studies in which herbicides were being evaluated for use in establishing certain forage legumes. In general, alfalfa plots with 50% or more ground cover by henbit showed 75 % or more terminal damage by the alfalfa weevil larvae. Much less damage was noted on plots containing few or no weeds.
