A rational simulator of photosynthesis in a single leaf has been constructed by incorporating the effects of light, temperature and CO 2 upon light and dark respiration, stomatal resistance to CO 2 diffusion and photochemical ability. The physical resistances of the boundary layer and mesophyll are also incorporated. The simulator behaves like a real leaf, demonstrating the fairly satisfactory state of knowledge of CO 2 assimilation. More important, it permits estimates of the efficacy of changes in respiration and other identified characteristics in changing net assimilation.
