Inheritance of plant height and earliness was studied in two crosses, ‘0‐753’ ✕ ‘Desimasua’ and 0‐753 ✕ ‘0‐6E,’ of jute ( Corchorus olltorius L.) using P 1 , P 2 , F 1 , F 2 , B 1 . and B 2 progenies. Herltability was found to be 57% and 59% for earliness and 49% and 8% for plant height, respectively, in 0‐753 ✕ 0‐6E and 0‐753 ✕ Desimasua. Over dominance and partial dominance were detected for plant height in 0‐753 ✕ Desimasua and 0‐753 ✕ 0‐6E, respectively, whereas partial dominance was observed for earliness in both crosses. Expected genetic advance in F 3 means over F 2 means under selection suggested that transgressive segregation was expected for both the characters in segregating progenies. Detection and estimation of epistasis indicated that in the cross 0‐753 ✕ Desimasua, epistasis was due to additive ✕ dominance effects for the two characters, whereas in 0‐753 ✕ 0‐6E, epistasis was due to all three types of non‐allelic interaction for plant height.
