Effect of Plant Spacing on Carbohydrates in Roots and on Components of Seed Yield in Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) 1

Solid rows (60 cm apart) of a 2‐year‐old irrigated ‘Flamande’ alfalfa stand for seed were thinned by removing 50% of the stand, using two different spacing schedules. In treatment one, 22.5 cm of free space was alternated with 22.5 cm of plants. In treatment two, 45 cm of free space was alternated with 45 cm of plants. Height and weight of shoot regrowth after cutting in thinned rows were less than in unthinned rows. Highest seed yields were obtained in the 22.5‐cm thinned and the lowest in solid rows. Seed yields were positively associated with percent carbohydrate of the roots. The numbers of secondary branches, racemes/stem and pods/raceme were greater in thinned than in unthinned rows.
