Pollen Growth of Alfalfa In Vitro as Influenced by Grouping of Grains on the Medium and Greenhouse Versus Field Sources 1

Pollen germination and tube growth of alfalfa ( Medicage sativa L.) were studied on a sucrose‐agar medium. Pollen tube length of clones grown in the greenhouse was significantly greater than that of the same clones grown in the field. Pollen germination was not significantly affected. Clumping of pollen grains on the medium had no effect on pollen tube length. Self‐fertility (seed‐set percentage per self‐pollinated flower) and pods per plant per week were positively correlated with pollen tube length. Pollen germination percentage was independent of pollen‐tube length, self‐fertility, and numbers of racemes, flowers, pods, and seeds produced.
