Backcrosses of cytoplasmic‐genetic male sterility to Stoneville D 2 247, an experimental strain of Upland cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum ) showed a highly significant correlation between fiber strength (T 1 ) and male sterility. No such association between T 1 and sterility appeared in similar backcrosses to several widely‐grown commercial varieties of Upland cotton.
