Dry matter digestibility (DMD) of stems and whole plants of eight pearl millet genotypes was positively and significantly correlated with leafiness from about the boot stage to maturity, but not before. DMD of leaves was not significantly correlated with leafiness at any stage. Within genotypes, DMD of leaves, stems, and whole plants was positively correlated with leafiness and negatively correlated with age; nearly all correlations were significant, but the latter were generally larger in absolute value. Lignin content was an excellent predictor of DMD; correlation coefficients were −.91 for leaves and −.88 for stems. DMD of leaves, but not of stems, was significantly correlated with crude protein and crude fiber content, but less closely than with lignin content.
