The oat strain P.L 174544 ( Arena sativa L.) has adult plant but not seedling resistance to race groups 202 and 264, and some races of group 290 of crown rust ( Puccinia coronata Cda. var. avenae Fraser and Led.). Its resistance was conditioned by a single major gene, but minor genc effects were also important under some conditions. The resistance of P.I. 174544 was nonallelic to that of certain other well‐known sources of field resistance. Pure lines derived from crossing P.I. 174544 with the susceptible ‘Clinton’ were obtained that had the full resistance of P.I. 174544, as measured in terms of effect of crown rust on yield, seed weight and seed density.
