A procedure for the development of single‐cross hybrids from two‐eared maize populations was outlined. Selections are made among individual plant crosses in each generation of inbreeding. Selection among individual plant genotypes is continued until the plants are relatively homozygous, at which time one should have a group of selected single‐cross hybrids that have been tested at each level of inbreeding. The procedure is designed to maximize selection for nonadditive genetic effects. Two generations of individual plant selection for yield have been completed. A mild selection intensity (approximately 36%) was used in each generation. Relative to six common hybrid checks, selection was effective in the first generation.
