Lodging Response of Certain Selections of Oats, Avena sativa L., and Their Hybrid Progenies 1

Lodging responses of certain oat selections and their hybrid progenies were studied for three seasons at Madison, Wisconsin. Progeny rows were evaluated for lodging response by a “snap test” and by estimating actual lodging percentages. Analyses of variance indicated that lines were more accurately characterized by snap values than by lodging percentages. On the basis of intergenerational comparisons and genotype ✕ environment interactions, snap scores were more repeatable than were lodging percentages. Genotypic and phenotypic as well as simple correlations of snap scores with lodging percentages indicated that the snap test could be useful in evaluating oat lines for lodging responses.
