Normal Gossypium hirsutum displays an abundance of trichomes on the stems and leaves at all stages of vegetative development. A single plant of the strain Orinoco represents a radical departure from this pattern in that it has glabrous stems and pubescent leaves. Genetical studies revealed that glabrous stem is inherited as a simple dominant trait when Orinoco is crossed to the hirsute‐stemmed variety, Empire. The possible value of this new character as a marker stock is underscored.
