A highly fertile amphiploid (2n=42) was obtained between H. jubatum (2n=28) and H. compressum (2n=14). The F 1 plants were sterile, taller than either parent, and had a chromosome complement of 2n=21. The amphiploid was obtained by doubling the chromosomes of the F 1 hybrid by colchicine treatment. The embryo culture technique was used in obtaining the F 1 and amphiploid hybrid plants.
