T)ANICUM coloratum L. and P. stapfianum Fourcade are -*• highly palatable pasture grasses native to South Africa. Ecotypes of these species are often referred to as the Panicum coloratum complex because of their apparent introgression and the difficulty of classifying them taxonomically. They thrive under a wide range of soil and climatic conditions and appear to have considerable promise for some areas of the southwestern United States. One highly variable introduction of P. coloratum, called kleingrass, is being used to some extent for pasture in Texas but severe seed shattering limits its acceptance at this time.
