THE pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), causes serious damage to alfalfa in many areas of the United States. Populations of this insect commonly reach a peak in spring and fall, but they sometimes are sufficient to cause serious damage in mid-summer. An estimate of 4.1% loss of alfalfa hay due to pea aphids (2) constitutes an annual loss of approximately 60 million dollars on the present acreage in the U.S.
