The tetraploid (2n z 32) T. repens L. has been crossed successfully with the diploid (2n -16) T. n~grescens Viv.~ (2, 3) and with the tetraploid (2n 32) T. uniflorum L. (6). Keim (3) succeeded in obtaining vigorous hybrids between hexaploid (2n -48) T. ambJguum Bieb. and diploid (2n ---16) T. hybridum L. by the use of embryo-culture technique. Taxonomically unrelated clover species have not been hybridized successfully~,4 (7, 8). This paper reports on crossings between the diploid T. hybridum L., T. michelia~zum Savi, and T. nigrescens Viv. The author (2) found that hybrids were readily produced when certain accessions of T. nigrescens were used as pollen parents in crosses with accessions of T. repens. Accessions of these species were compared in attempts to overcome crossing barriers between diploid Trifolium and to elucidate species relationship in this agronomically important genus.
