The evaluation of soluble components exchange between sediments and the pore or overlying water is essential for the quantitative description of sediment‐water systems. Lake and farm pond sediments differing in degree of nutrient enrichment were equilibrated with varying amounts of water. The extraction of soluble components is described as a function of a linear distribution of the soluble components between the solid and liquid phases and through mass‐balance considerations. The sizes of potentially available nutrient pools and the distribution coefficients were calculated for NH 4 + , organic N, and C. Ortho‐P release appeared to depend upon solubility consideration and did not follow the above‐mentioned model.
