With virtually a non‐stop growing season with mild winters and fertile soils, southeast California's desert region provides 80% of the fresh fruits and vegetables for the U.S. in the winter. But, without the combined efforts of science, technology, industry, university research, Cooperative Extension, and government support, the miracle known as “America's Winter Garden” would otherwise be an inhospitable desert wasteland.
