An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So goes the statement penned more than 250 years ago by American scholar and philosopher Benjamin Franklin. In the modern art and science that integrated pest management (IPM) is, Franklin's statement helps introduce the concept of pest prevention through equipment inspection and cleaning. This brief article discusses the relationship among transportation, the equipment user, the equipment item, and the pest (Fig. 1). It further examines the consequences of contaminated equipment and provides equipment inspection and cleaning guidance.
