A porous membrane has been used for root studies of upland crops but not for crops grown under submerged conditions. A field study was conducted to compare the growth of paddy rice ( Oryza sativa L.) with and without root confinement within a porous membrane. Three membrane configurations were compared: (i) a narrow membrane; (ii) a wide membrane; and (iii) a modified wide membrane. Root confinement within membranes reduced all shoot growth and yield parameters compared to soil‐grown plants (control). Reductions in shoot growth and yield parameters were usually least for the modified wide membrane and greatest for the narrow membrane.
