The purpose of this study was to design a fast and accurate method of harvesting cultivars and experimental lines of wheat grown under a line source sprinkler irrigation system. The harvesting system consisted of a strain gauge transducer energized with an amplifier‐indicator mounted on a Hege combine and a millivolt recorder and Omnidata Polycorder (use of trade names does not imply endorsement). Both methods of monitoring the voltage output from the transducer were adequately sensitive to allow continuous harvest and recording of yields at different distances from the line source sprinkler. Use of the polycorder was preferable to the millivolt recorder because data were more rapidly and accurately translated for computer‐assisted statistical analyses. This method will make it possible to quickly measure and compare the differential response of wheat cultivars and experimental lines to moisture stress.
