An inexpensive electro‐optical system was developed and evaluated for measuring leaf areas. The system consisted of a standard optical lens and circuitry to digitize images, and was interfaced with a microcomputer. Software was developed to measure total leaf areas or differential green, chlorotic, and total areas. Cost of the system, excluding the microcomputer, was under $450. The system provided accurate measurements of leaf area when the lens was positioned so that leaves being measured occupied > 5% of the useable image area.
