A hydraulic soil‐coring machine has been designed and constructed to attach to the arm of a tractor‐mounted backhoe. The system reduces the passes through a plot with sampling equipment and also allows samples to be taken with the tractor outside the plot when soil and/or crop conditions do not allow access. It has been successfully used in summer row crop experiments for: (i) taking small diameter (to 5 cm) intact soil cores to a maximum depth of 2 m, (ii) inserting access tubes for soil‐water monitoring using a neutron probe, and (iii) placing large diameter tubes (up to 30 cm) to shallow depths (45 cm) for nutrient isotope studies.
