It is usually difficult to relocate specific sites in fields. Many methods have been used, including metal detectors, permanent stakes and measuring from bench mark sites. A new system has been developed which has advantages over all these methods. It consists of a peg (transponder) that can be buried below cultivation depth and an easily operated detector that can detect the peg from approximately 2 m distance and home in on the exact position. The accuracy is within 5 cm when the peg is buried at a 1‐m depth. The equipment is of sturdy construction and the pegs remain useable for many years.
