Purpose: The purpose of ARCPACS is to develop standards and procedures for recognition of persons qualified as professionals in Agronomy, Crops and Soils, and to maintain a registry of persons so qualified for the welfare of the general public. It is a non-profit corporation operated in cooperation with the American Society of Agronomy, Inc. (ASA), the Crop Science Society of America, Inc. (CSSA) and the Soil Science Society of Ameria, Inc. (SSSA). For a long time the public has demanded evidence of professional competence from those whose professional activities affect the well-being and economic attitude of the general public. This need for professional standards has been recognized by groups in medicine, law, engineering, and accounting. New laws governing crop production and quality requirements: air, water and soils quality standards; disposal of industrial and municipal as well as agricultnral wastes; and use of agricultural chemicals are examples of new situations that require the services of specialists in agronomy, crops or soils. Many regulatory and control programs require inputs from those professionals. This requirement in turn generates a definite need for a means of identifying persons who are qualified professionals in agronomy. crops, and soils. It is, therefore, now essential that those persons having special competence and skills in agronomy, crops, and soils be able to show evidence of their training, experience and special abilities. A realistic certification program, which will identify these qualified professionals for educational and scientific activities with public and private agencies, is clearly for the welfare of the general public. In order to meet this need, ARCPACS is established.
