A four‐row single cone planter that could be easily detached from a tractor was needed for off‐station cereal leaf beetle ( Oulema melanopus (L.)) research plots. The grain box and three disk openers were removed from a small seven‐row drill equipped with a three‐point hitch and a cone seeder with a four‐row divider was installed. A fertilizer attachment was also installed. The length of plots can be easily changed from 2 to 15 m with a variable speed drive which is part of the commercial cone unit. The planter has been successfully used in planting plots of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.), barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.), and oats ( Avena sativa L.)
