Redox potential and pH are two soil conditions that exert major influence on the solubility and availability of plant nutrients. In order to study the effects of these conditions on the transformation of plant nutrients in the soil and their uptake by plants, it is necessary to control pH and redox potential over a wide range of values. A relatively simple system has been developed by which soils can be incubated under conditions of controlled redox potential and pH. Rice plants were grown in the soil suspensions incubated at six different redox potentials (—200, —100, 0, +100, +200, and +400 mV) and four pH values (5, 6, 7, and 8).
