The methods of computing area from maps are classified under two categories: 1) bounded area and 2) weighted sub‐areas. Pioneering methods of planimeter, coordinate squares, triangular rule, trapezoidal rule, Simpson's rule, double‐meridian‐distance, coordinates, and digitizer are compared with the newly introduced methods of weighing technique and finite segments, and also with a recently developed Monte Carlo process. The results indicate that the weighing technique and finite segments are relatively easy to use in laboratory and computerized procedure, respectively; and the Monte Carlo method is more applicable and powerful than other computerized methods.
