While working with some of the Natrargids it was observed that zinc had beneficial effects on the germination and growth of plants. To verify this observation, a greenhouse experiment was conducted. Zinc application enhanced germination percentage, plant growth, Zn, and K concentration and K/Na ratio in maize ( Zea mays L.) whereas Na concentration and P/Zn ratio decreased. Application of S alone increased Na and S concentrations, decreased K and Ca concentrations and K/Na ratio. Except for Zn and K, the concentrations of other nutrients studied were higher in plants receiving S than those receiving Zn or Zn + S treatments. The ameliorative role of Zn in plant growth under alkali soil conditions was found to be associated with the changes brought about in the chemical composition of plants.
