An instrument that can accurately and rapidly measure the forces and energies associated with certain physical properties of biological materials (e.g., breaking strength of stems) was designed and built. Loading force applied to the material and movement of the force‐loading device are recorded simultaneously. From these measurements, energy quantities can be calculated. Means for readily changing force‐loading speeds and rapidly returning the force‐loading device to its starting position are provided.
