Light reflected at the 850‐nm wavelength by cellular constituents of living Zebrina leaf epidermal cells was measured with a microspectrophotometer assembly to ascertain if discontinuities other than cell wall‐air interfaces in plant leaves contribute to infrared light reflectance. Results showed that cellular membranes and middle lamellae reflected more light than the surrounding protoplasm and cell walls, respectively. Therefore, it has been demonstrated that refractive index discontinuities other than cell wall‐air interfaces also reflect near‐infrared light.
