Herbage of several forage legumes and grasses was harvested at first flower (beginning of anthesis in grasses) and analyzed for percentage of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) during 3 years. No significant difference was found among species for the 3‐year averages. However, red dover ( Trifolium pratense L.), among the legumes, and timothy ( Phleum pratense L.), among the grasses, were consistently high in TNC percentage during all 3 years.
