Survival from artificial crown‐freezing and field nurseries was compared for 31 winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) varieties. Both —8.9 C and —11.6 C crownfreezing temperatures were required to adequately differentiate all 31 wheat varieties into coldhardiness levels. Crown‐freezing survival percentages were lower at each later reading date following crown freezing. Delayed crown‐freezing survival readings correlated better with natural survival from the uniform regional nurseries than readings taken soon after the freezing cycle. The general level of correlations of crown‐freezing survival with natural survival was lower for winter wheat than previously presented by the authors for winter barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.). Contributing factors may have been the wide range of winterhardiness in winter wheat and inadequate locations of tests for differential natural survival. The crown‐freezing technique would enable the winter wheat plant breeder to evaluate material for cold‐hardiness every year instead of only those few isolated winters that produce differential natural field survival.
