Field experiments were conducted to determine the effect of applied N on water use by continuously cropped spring wheat. Applied N increased vegetative growth and soil water extraction prior to heading. In two of the three sample years, this extraction of the soil water reserve resulted in less soil water exraction after heading by the N‐fertilized crop than by the nonfertilized crop. Applied N did not increase depth of soil water extraction. Overwinter recharge of soil water was inversely related to soil water content at harvest.
