Research situations which fall into one of two broad classifications: ( 1 ) those which can be managed without the computer but less efficiently and ( 2 ) those which can not be managed without a computer, are emphasized through utilization of existing programs. The Statistics‐Computer interface is focused on experimental situations through a general linear (least squares) model program. These least squares programs are being developed for a wide class of data processing problems, including the capacity to handle more complete analyses of variance. In addition to data processing, experimenters can use computers efficiently in other phases of agronomic research, e.g., literature searching, planning of experiments, simulation, and data storage and retrieval.
