Two local varieties of transplant aman rice, ‘Nigersail’ and ‘Latisail,’ were grown in three different cultural methods ‐ (a) normal, (b) plowless‐weedcut, and (c) plowless‐Gramoxone ‐ to study the efficiency of Gramoxone. a nonselective weedkiller, as a substitute for tillage operations and weed control in aman rice production. Results indicated that Gramoxone could destroy very efficiently the aboveground parts of all the species of weeds that grew in 'the experimental plots. But, it was not a complete substitute for tillage since it did not control subsequent weed growth which began approximately 2 weeks after treatment. Tillage had no appreciable effect, other than controlling weeds, upon the performance of transplant aman rice.
