Legumes are needed in the grain rotation of the central Anatolia region of Turkey and in other areas. Therefore, it was necessary to find a legume tolerant of the severe climatic conditions in this region. Vicia sativa subsp. amphicarpa, a native plant in this region, produces both subterranean and aerial seeds. This characteristic of producing subterranean seeds enhances persistence under severe cold or drought conditions and under heavy grazing.
