Determinations of LAI 3 , CGR, LA/LW, LA/W, canopy height, and light attenuation were made for two canning pea cultivars in all possible combinations of three row spacings and three plant populations at several growth stages. The leaf area values and canopy heights, when considered in relation to models for simulating photosynthesis in plant communities, indicated that the development of increased LAI in conjunction with changes in leaf orientation and distribution and maintenance of maximum canopy height should be objectives in pea improvement programs. LA/W changes and their relationship to LAI and CGR provide evidence that growth had a positive effect on photosynthetic activity. LA/LW varied as a function of population, growth stage, and cultivar.
